This chapter summarises the physical principles of optical absorption spectroscopy and its use for the characterisation of surfaces and interfaces. After a brief discussion of the fundamentals of absorption spectroscopy and its relation to quantum mechanics, the chapter discusses the basics of optics at interfaces, focusing on the absorption of   region [], and in nonlinear optical studies of surfaces and interfaces. [23,24] We examine the optical models systematically in this paper. In Section II, we layout the basic equations for the 2D and 3D models, as well as the linearized version of the 2D model. In Section III, This book covers linear and nonlinear optics as well as optical spectroscopy at solid surfaces and at interfaces between a solid and a liquid or gas. The authors give a concise introduction to the The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and approaches involved in semiconductor physics. The selection first elaborates on the electronic properties and surface geometry of GaAs and ZnO surfaces; electronic structure of Si (III) surfaces; and photoemission studies of surface states on Si (III) ://
